After Extraction
Rebuilding with industrial residues.
After Extraction is a material research project investigating the analysis and remediation of toxic waste embedded in landscapes by extractive industries.
Situated within a post-industrial mining landscape in Cornwall, UK, the project focuses on deposited heavy metals that continue to pollute the environment today - long after mining and processing activities ceased in the 1980s.
Through solidification and stabilisation research using adjacent industrial by-products, such as blast furnace slag, a geopolymer material is formed that is capable of immobilising contaminants.
The resulting sculpture demonstrates that toxic waste can be chemically contained and re-engineered.
By utilising industrial waste streams for remediation and emerging material systems, the research ultimately proposes circular innovation for post-industrial repair.
