Biomineral Trace

Where imperfection becomes value.

Nearly half of all marble extracted is discarded - where luxury becomes waste.

Constructed from limestone and marble, this structure holds a revalued marble sample. Inspired by kintsugi, bacteria-induced biomineralisation forms calcium carbonate within its cracks. By binding marble dust, and Akoya shell fragments; echoing marble’s geological origins in marine shells.

The project translates research on biomineralisation and the carbon cycle into a sculptural object. It traces how carbon can move through living systems and return to stone, restoring an ancient balance between atmospheric carbon and mineral form. Here, fracture becomes a site of revaluation, where material, time and transformation converge.
