Faux Flora
Artificial flowers to guide pollinators in air-polluted environments.
Urban air pollutants disrupt floral odours, altering the scent of flowers and making it difficult for pollinating insects to locate essential plants. Faux Flora is an artificial flower system designed to guide pollinators toward nearby flower-rich areas. Developed in collaboration with NICE Labs, it incorporates three key traits that transform an inorganic object into a ‘flower-like’ structure: a sweet scent, a reflective surface, and radial symmetry. Acting as visual and olfactory beacons with
no nectar reward, insects quickly learn to forage in the surrounding environment. Through artificial chemistry and biomimicry, Faux Flora explores new relationships between species, technology, and cities.
