Botanic Time Capsule
This project uses plant tissue culture to replicate and ‘grow’ extinct leaves
This project speculates how plant tissue culture techniques could preserve and celebrate plant biodiversity. By preserving the genetic material of these plants, we can better understand their biology and ecological roles, and potentially even bring them back to life in the future. This technique involves manipulating the growth and development of plant cells in a laboratory environment using specialised equipment and media.
The plants in this project represent a link between me and my grandfather who was a botanist. It serves as a reminder that plants can also be seen as a legacy and a continuation of family ties. By using plant tissue culture techniques to replicate and grow extinct leaves, I hope to create a sustainable method of conserving the unique traits of different plant species and honour the legacy of botanists like my grandfather.
Ultimately, this project is not just about preserving plant biodiversity, but also about celebrating the human connection to the natural world. It is a call to action for individuals and communities to take responsibility for our impact on the environment and work towards a more sustainable future.
