From a Washing Machine
How can we mine unique materials from our most mundane objects?
By 2080, more metal will be found in our homes than underground. As a species, we will have unearthed so many minerals that the most significant metal reserves will be found in our appliances through above-ground mining. Within these objects, there is an extraordinary variety of materials, such as glass, concrete, rubber, plastic, and metal.
Each resource in this installation was extracted and crafted from a washing machine. By looking back to traditional craft processes, this project seeks to reframe our perception of this seemingly unremarkable object and illustrate the material abundance, potential, and beauty found within.
