Crispy

Recycling non-recyclable crisp packets

Crisps are an integral part of British culture, with the UK being the third-highest consumer of salty snacks worldwide, consuming 6 billion packets of crisps annually. However, due to the high salt and oil content in crisps, the packaging requires high-tech multilayered materials that are difficult to recycle and are not accepted in home recycling programmes. Despite this, many people mistakenly include crisp packets in their recycling, leading to incineration, landfill, or littering.

This project aims to demonstrate that complex plastic packaging like crisp packets can be recycled and are worth recycling. A specialised separation process can delaminate a single crisp pack into four different materials: two PP films, a metallic PET film, and ink. The objects displayed are 100% made from these materials, from the structural components down to the paint, and are recyclable once again.
