If These Clothes Could Talk

Recording sound onto textiles to close the gap between makers and consumers of fast fashion

This project revolves around a machine I have created that uses textile yarn as a new medium for audio recording and playback, with the primary goal being to address the disconnect between fast fashion consumers and garment workers.

I have recorded the voices of garment workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh within the very fibres of the yarns used to construct fast-fashion. These are their stories of how it is for them to make the clothes that we wear.

This proof of concept highlights the potential for future garments to incorporate the voices of their makers, providing a compelling reminder of the importance of ethical and sustainable fashion practices whilst also showcasing the power of technology to promote transparency and accountability within the fashion industry.
