Auxetic Metamaterial
This project explores the potential of auxetic structures for future fashion applications
The auxetic structure has many special properties: it is incredibly shock-absorbing, is resistant to breaking, and is extremely flexible. To achieve different textures and properties using just one printing material, I designed and fabricated different auxetic structures that can each be 3D-printed for a variety of different fashion applications. By altering the inner structure, as well as the mechanical and physical properties of the material, I can obtain a variety of radically different textures within the same final product.
For example, whilst TPU was the only 3D-printing material used, by adjusting the aperture shape, size, and wall thickness of the auxetic structures, I am able to adjust the hardness, softness, and elasticity of the final product. Therefore, the final 3D-printed form can provide both surface metallic-like textures and more linen-like materials internally, despite being constructed using the same process and material and within the same 3D-printed form.
